![]() ![]() This is the sometimes horrific, yet always instructive, story of Bears & Humans, written by the leading scientific authority in the field, Stephen Herrero. If you've ever read the book, you need to get this documentry, its a must have.Bear Attacks is a thorough study of bear attacks on humans. Not too many nights I hope though, because she did the best she could in a hellish situation and did it better than many others would have had they been in her place. Has she lived with that decision all these years, she has, do I think it probably still keeps her up nights, at least occasionally, I do. In one of the last scenes of this film Devereaux is looking at the camera and states that the doctors on scene that night told her later that even if the victim had been attacked right in front of a hospital, and recieved immediate care, she would not have survived, then she licks her lips nervously and looks away. I've always wondered how she dealt with that decision in the days and years after she'd made it, knowing that Julie Helguson was lying there in the dark, waiting for help. ![]() I wasn't there and can't say if it was right or wrong but I don't think I would have made the same call. I've always admired the way she made decisions and stuck with them that night but also felt that one decision, not letting a rescue party go looking for the victim until an armed ranger arrived may have been the wrong one. The fresh faced young ranger is now a middle aged woman who has had years to think about her role that night. One major player in particular that I've always admired was the young female park ranger, Joan Devereaux, who was thrown into the middle of a night of horror and rose to the challenge admirably. It also tells you what's happened to the survivors since the incidents and that is as interesting as what happened that fateful night. It does that and more, if you're a fan of Olsen's book you'll love this film, it covers the incidents very well, it fills in some blanks, and most importantly, it introduces you the the people and places involved, so you can actually see them. When I saw this documentry dealing with the subject I had to have it and hoped that it would live up to the book. I've re-read the book several times since and it never fails to make an impression. I read Jack Olsen's book, "The Night of the Grizzlies" back in the 70's and it really affected me deeply, the thought of being attacked at night by such a fearsome creature, and being helpless to do anything, it stayed with me. ![]()
